Wordless Wednesday: Femme Oriental by Jean-François Portaels (c. 1877)
This technically isn't a Wordless Wednesday because I wanted to say some things to go along with this lovely Orientalist painting. I love Orientalist paintings, even though some of them have the tendency to sensationalize and/or exploit non-Western cultures. But many of them, like this one, are simply beautiful. I've always liked to think about what story the painting is trying to tell. This one reminds me of the Virgin Mary. I've decided that on Wordless Wednesdays I'll post a picture or painting and then the next day I'll post a short short story (500 words or less) inspired by the image. It will be fun and also a good writing exercise.
