|Which Ancient Bad Girl Are You?|
Queen Dido of Carthage
Though famously depicted in the Aeneid as a heart-broken queen who killed herself for lost love, the real Dido killed herself for independence. Having founded her own city, she wasn't going to hand it over to a foreign king who demanded her hand in marriage. So she stabbed herself and threw herself on a funeral pyre in honor of her goddess. A spiritual woman, Dido was clever and inventive. Rather than fight her brother for supremacy in Tyre, she forged out with other explorers and settlers to found the city of Carthage, then negotiated for land by saying she'd only need as much as could be covered by an ox hide. When the price was agreed, Dido tore the ox hide into tiny strips to make a rope that would enclose the foundations of her new city. A courageous visionary!
